Q&A

Zakat is not just a tax: it is an act of worship and solidarity with those in need.

Each lunar year (Hawl), every Muslim who possesses savings reaching a certain threshold must pay 2.5% of their wealth, provided that this amount has remained above the Nisab for a full year.

The Nisab is the minimum level of wealth above which Zakat becomes obligatory.

In Morocco, the Nisab can be calculated using two references:

  • the value of 85 grams of gold
  • or the value of 595 grams of silver

In practice, many scholars recommend using silver, as it allows more people to benefit.

For reference (values vary depending on the market):

Nisab based on silver
approximately between 6,000 and 8,000 dirhams
Nisab based on gold
approximately between 55,000 and 65,000 dirhams

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have for Zakat to become obligatory.

In other words, if your money or assets reach or exceed this amount for a full lunar year, you must pay 2.5% as Zakat.

How is it determined?

Nisab is based on the value of:

  • 85 grams of gold, or
  • 595 grams of silver

In practice (in Morocco):

  • If your savings exceed this threshold and remain stable for 1 year → Zakat is obligatory
  • If it is below → no Zakat is required

Important:

Many scholars recommend using the Nisab based on silver, as it is lower and allows more people in need to benefit.
